We spoke about the trinity of Jesus last week in his being a prophet, priest, and a king.  This week Abraham sees the appearance of God as three men, who he addresses as

Lord” in the singular.  This shows Abraham being aware of the trinity in the beginning!

And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;  And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,  And said, My LORD, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant. Genesis 18:1-3

We know that God is one god from the Old Testament and from Jesus.  The Jews were prepared by this to understand the idea of God being one, and also three personalities at once.  The final salvation is being revealed in the beginning of the faith.  Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are all revealed in this.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: Deut 6:4

And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?  And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:  And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.  Mark 12:28-30

And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.  And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son.  And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.  Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.  Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?  And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?  Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.  Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.  Genesis 18:9-18

Some of you older gals may not be laughing now.  Fortunately this couple had no children, and welcomed an old age miracle.  Hope is real, and God is greater than nature.  He is supernatural, superior to nature.  His promises are sure.

These three spirits left after Abraham had pleaded for any righteous souls in those cities.  The word says that two angels arrived in Sodom.  It is common when angels appear, for them to say, “fear not” because they are impressive beings.  The men of Sodom were impressed, but lusted instead of fearing them.  They lost the fear of God, and all wisdom with it.  Perhaps they felt that being a mob would let them overpower these beautiful men.  They came to Lot’s house with a violent plan, and they threatened Lot as well.  Do they remember how Abraham had given them victory over their enemies?

And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.  But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.  And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.  Genesis 19:9-11

We all have sin, but these men went past fearing God.  They were so given to rebellion that they trusted violence to get their way.  They had no fear, and trusted their popular advice, the strength of numbers.  There are groups promoting sin today as being the right thing to do.  Popular acceptance of their ideas does not make them right.  Today they have children working as sex slaves in Asia, and even in this country.

How many forms does sin take when protected by popular acceptance?  Singles web sites are plagued by gays who do not respect the rules.  Bodybuilding has a host of perversions growing around it.  But the church can have sin too, and also earns the wages of death.  I have seen a man stand up and bring accusation against his pastor during a Sunday morning service.  An elected board can turn against a man of God if they think the voters support them.  But God has a bigger vote, the ultimate veto.

And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:  For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.  Genesis 19: 12-13

God did destroy the evil, and Lot lost his wife when she looked back on their old life.  He was afraid of his neighbors after this, and hid in a cave.  Sometimes a man’s worst enemies are those of his own household though.  The desire for children makes some people a bit insane.  His children let fear rule their actions, instead of trusting God for a solution.  Lot’s daughters give birth to the fathers of Israel’s enemy nations.

And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.  And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:  Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.  Genesis 19:30-32

And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.  And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.  Gen 19:37-38 (KJV)

Lot was delivered by Abraham’s prayer, but Abraham himself found new trouble.  He is still calling his wife his sister, which is half-true.  She is his half-sister and his wife.  But another king is tempted by Sarah, who must be over 90 by this time.  God reveals the truth, and this king is saved from this error.  Abraham is so jealous that he nearly caused his worst fear to come true.  Jealousy is a dangerous tool in the wrong hands.

If you are married you must live a new life, surrendered to serving your partner’s needs.  There are many dangers in a new relationship.  For this reason, in the Old Testament they sent young soldiers home if they were married for less than a year.  Their first year was dedicated to the new family.

Abstain from all appearance of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:22

A new marriage should not be challenged by your hobbies or even your job.  You should limit working with the opposite sex, or being away from home for long hours.  Let your partner be a participant, sharing your work when possible.  Be accountable, and steer away from weak souls and temptation.  One could also be wise to avoid contact with the opposite sex except in public gatherings.  Wisdom is needed.  As Abraham shows us, this is even true in our senior years.

Abraham has no cause to be jealous of his wife’s behavior here.  He caused the problem by his own fears.  We have to guard against listening to the voices of fear.  They are the same spirits that accuse others of sin, without waiting for evidence.  Their father is the Accuser of the brethren.  He has a bad end, and we do not want to go with him:

And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.  Revelation 12:10

And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.  For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.  And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. Genesis 21:1-3

Imagine the joy and laughter about this event!  Are our seniors today ready for great things?  The word says this generation will do exploits!

Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.  And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son.  And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.  And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed. Genesis 21:10-13

So we have Israel and the Arabs today, two nations awaiting revelation of one messiah.

And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.  And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.  And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.  And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.  Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.  Genesis 21:14-18

Today we see three religions sharing one foundation in Abraham.  Jesus divided the Jews, and later Mohammed blended elements of both faiths.  In the future we will see how elements of these three can become one kingdom, as the messiah will unite his people in the world.  The trinity will be fulfilled when the body of believers become mature sons of God.
