The Chronicles relate the days of David’s conflict with Saul with less detail than the previous books.  But they tell at length the lists of those who served with David in his trials.

Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.  They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul’s brethren of Benjamin.  The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; and Jeziel, and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; and Berachah, and Jehu the Antothite.  And Ismaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; and Jeremiah, and Jahaziel, and Johanan, and Josabad the Gederathite,  Eluzai, and Jerimoth, and Bealiah, and Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite,  Elkanah, and Jesiah, and Azareel, and Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korhites,  And Joelah, and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.  1 Chronicles 12:1-7

Those who serve deserve recognition, as most are participants in name only.  If it’s good to have a right hand man, how much better to have an ambidextrous man!

And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;  Ezer the first, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third,  Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,  Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,  Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,  Jeremiah the tenth, Machbanai the eleventh.  These were of the sons of Gad, captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred, and the greatest over a thousand.  1 Chronicles 12:8-14

If God has chosen a people, he is able to provide the help they need.  Israel is a political nation, and has both good and bad leadership.  Spiritual Israel is found worldwide, and knows their master’s voice.  In Germany during the Second World War there were souls who served Yeshua even in opposition to the Nazis.  Spiritual Israel, the Kingdom of God has no borders in time or space.  Today as in David’s time the lions stand with the Lion of Judah.

These are they that went over Jordan in the first month, when it had overflown all his banks; and they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the east, and toward the west.  And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold unto David.  And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it.  Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.  And there fell some of Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.  As he went to Ziklag, there fell to him of Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that were of Manasseh.  1 Chronicles 12:15-20

While political Israel the nation was under bad leadership, God had provided David as a leader to spiritual Israel.  Today some Jews may be trying to wrestle with God as Jacob did, but God changed his name and his destiny to Israel.  God has provided us one good Jewish savior to lead us to victory, and he lives in our bible.  If we know the bible, we know Yeshua.  Israel the nation has been promised an introduction to their messiah in God’s time and he will do his job.  We don’t need to help him; we need to help his people.

And they helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host.  For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God.  And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready armed to the war, and came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.  The children of Judah that bare shield and spear were six thousand and eight hundred, ready armed to the war.  Of the children of Simeon, mighty men of valour for the war, seven thousand and one hundred.  Of the children of Levi four thousand and six hundred.  1 Chronicles 12:21-26

God had already anointed David to become the good leader of Israel.  He has promised to save Israel, and many were prepared to stand with David.  Today we may read that some Christians are opposing the Jews.  I have also read that young Christians are not waiting to have sex.  When does a Christian become a backslider, no longer repentant and willing to be saved by grace?  Perhaps these are not Christians if they go against the instructions in the bible.  Jesus IS the Word, and if we do not know the bible, we do not know Jesus.

Saul couldn’t wait on God either, and turned to witchcraft in his rebellion.

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. 1 Samuel 15:23

Do Jews conspire against outsiders?  Saul too was a rebellious Jew, and God has his own plan for them.  His instructions to us are clear.

I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.  God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,  Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.  But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.  Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.  Romans 11:1-5

There are many Jews coming to Yeshua or Jesus today.  More will follow, replacing the Christians who fall away in rebellion.  We are warned not to rail against Israel, as they will be reunited with Judah in God’s time.

And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;  Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.  Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.  Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:  For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.  Romans 11:17-21

You can see the division of Israel and Judah even today in this example.  The good King David was human and his sin led to that kingdom division later.  The rift is defined clearly between Law and Grace in our time.  That rift will be closed as the Law is fulfilled in the manifestation of messiah’s return.  Those who serve God will not be double minded.

And Jehoiada was the leader of the Aaronites, and with him were three thousand and seven hundred;  And Zadok, a young man mighty of valour, and of his father’s house twenty and two captains.  And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul.  And of the children of Ephraim twenty thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valour, famous throughout the house of their fathers.  And of the half tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, which were expressed by name, to come and make David king.  And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.  Of Zebulun, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all instruments of war, fifty thousand, which could keep rank: they were not of double heart.  And of Naphtali a thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty and seven thousand.  And of the Danites expert in war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred.  And of Asher, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand.  And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand.  1 Chronicles 12:27-37

David was not perfect, but he discovered that God offers grace.  Perhaps his sins were greater than Ahab’s, but he found help in trusting God.  Humility and repentance gave him power to see the messiah who would follow him.  The men of David sensed his willingness to submit to God; his righteousness.

All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.  And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them.  Moreover they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.  1 Chronicles 12:38-40

The dead beast of Nazism is rising again around the world, without borders on earth.  The son of David is waiting with the host of heaven, having no borders in the universe.  Do you know the bible?  Do you know Yeshua?  Can you obey without knowing him?

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:  (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)  Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;  2 Corinthians 10:3-5
