When some of Israel decided to worship on a mountain in Samaria a division began. Now these Samarians are sons of Abraham, but they are far from being friends of Israel. Even to this day they still worship on their mountain, and are removed from the faith of our God. One Samarian woman did meet Yeshua at a well and found life. Sanballat is one Samarian who does not earn the trust of Israel though.
Now it came to pass when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates). That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you? Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. Nehemiah 6:1-4
So Sanballat has come to Nehemiah with an offer for a friendly meeting. But Nehemiah is aware that this is not a good thing. He claims to be too busy for a meeting, but Sanballat keeps asking for the meeting, and is turned down again.
Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand; Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words. And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together. Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart. Nehemiah 6:5-8
Now the tone changes as Sanballat brings accusations against his Jewish brethren. He charges them with rebellion, and Nehemiah denies these charges. He calls Sanballat a liar. He recognizes the intent to discourage the work by threats. It might be a good time to find a friend.
For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee. And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in. And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me. My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear. Nehemiah 6:9-14
So Shemaiah suggests that Nehemiah should hide in the temple from those who would kill him. This is a call to surrender to fear, to abandon faith in God. Nehemiah recognizes this as demonic attack, not of God. This “friend” may have been hired by Sanballat, but he and Sanballat were both in the service of Hell. Nehemiah simply marks this invitation “return to sender”. He calls on God to consider the sin revealed in this. God is usually the one who reveals the threats to us in his wisdom, so he is well aware of the evil being done here already. It will not stand.
So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days. And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God. Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them. For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah. Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear. 6:15-19
It is interesting to note that the enemies of God recognize his work. They are without hope when they realize that they have opposed the living God, the true deity. Even so leaders of Judah were writing to Tobiah who was actually their enemy. He got favor by his daughter’s marriage, but not with God. Tobiah was part of the conspiracy to weaken Nehemiah by fear and threats.
A true man of God must have perception and revelation from God, not from man. A relationship with God will keep your feet from the snares of your enemies. Any leader who believes that all religions are good is deceived. From the beginning a few have deviated from the truth of God to their own destruction. Some have both deviated and turned to attack their own brethren. Come away from these.
From the beginning of time men have deviated from the truth. In the end times we are warned that even the elect may be deceived, as they were in the beginning. Our friends may come to us with an invitation to leave the way too. We have to have a relationship with Father, Son, and Holy Ghost to discern the right way. We can have that through prayer, bible study, and Christian fellowship. Prayer gives us the insight of Nehemiah, the bible offers the epistles to govern the church, and Christians like Nehemiah, who are spirit filled, offer sound counsel. Fight against the spirits by prayer; but not against the flesh. God will remove the weeds in his time.
A prophet who predicts an event that does not come to pass is a false prophet. They may come to change your direction, but they would cause you to become an enemy of God. Some will try to make you fear the end times, when God intends you to be fearless in trusting him. We must build the temple and strengthen the walls and the warriors of the kingdom. May God consider those who preach fear and falsehood according to their works, and also the false prophets by theirs. In the name of Yeshua I ask you to bind this on earth as you do in heaven.
