DISCERNMENT

We do not have the luxury of accepting any number of shades of grey.  God sees right and wrong and expects us to know the difference.  We have been given three persons of God to assure a balanced understanding.  Fellowship with Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are empowered by prayer, bible study, and spirit filled Christian fellowship.  Any two of these confirms the validity of the other.  We will never be snared by cool aid cults if prayer and bible study validate our church.  We will never pray to demons if our knowledge is scriptural and our church has Holy Ghost wisdom to share.  And we will not take scripture out of context with proper teaching and answered prayers.  Accept no less than a balanced relationship with the living God.  God expects us to live like this so we should not follow those who do not follow his expectations either.

Proverbs 18

Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.  A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.  When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.  The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.  It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.  Proverbs 18:1-5

When, motivated by greed, one becomes a loner he plans ways to pervert the truth and deceive the wise.

A fool is divorced from wisdom in order to do what feels good.  “If it feels good do it.”  many hippies have said.  Their children are following their road to hell today.

When an evil person comes he presents contempt for the good and the innocent, and his shamelessness earns him the loathing of all that is good.  In our lifetime these have arrived.

Words have the power of the great oceans, with winds, currents, and rip tides that can carry us far from safety and life.  Wisdom then is a pure spring that feeds a cool flowing stream of life.

It is unprofitable to be a friend of the evil man in an alliance against the wisdom of the righteous.  God has no option to back the least evil choice when there should be no evil choice.  The lesser of two evils still injures the innocent.

A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.  A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.  The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.  He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.  The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.  Proverbs 18:6-10

Fools start fights and invite a sound beating.  His mouth leads him to harm in this life and his words trap his soul in eternal punishment.

Those who bring a false accusation are perceived by their victims as back-stabbers who’s words tear like cutting vital organs.

A lazy employee is the same as one who squanders his employer’s money and materials.  Time is money as our paycheck should reflect.

The name of Jesus is a real and safe sanctuary where our weakness is made strong by God’s strength.  This name makes us righteous in spite of our sins, and we run to it when in danger of judgment.  This name is pronounced and spelled differently around the world and it is still known as safety to all who call on it.  To the Jews, Yeshua Ha Meschia welcomes them as Jesus answers in our language.

The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.  Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.  He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.  The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?  The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.  Proverbs 18:11-15

Yes, wealth can surround you with confidence that becomes insulation against knowing how wrong you may be.  The power to bully others or to hide from responsibility is not always an advantage.

Feeling pride and self importance can also be insulation against the knowledge of impending disaster.  One who is modest and humble may be on the path to promotion.

Being quick to render a decision without being fully informed is foolishness that will lead to the shame of being discredited.

One who is at peace with his conscience and his god will be undaunted by injury, illness, poverty, or opposition.  But if one is living a lie in guilt and secret shame there is no victory or prosperity to heal the spiritual wound.

A good man seeks right knowledge and wisdom.  He listens to wisdom and gathers understanding to prosper.

A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.  He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.  The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.  A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.  A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.  Proverbs 18:16-20

The talents we have are the gift of God to make a place for us, a calling, in life.

Life is hard and many contend for few opportunities so these gifts are to give us favor with the rulers in life.

He that has the opportunity to tell his story first may feel that he has proven his point.  However, that leaves him open to the other side of the story when his opponent has his turn to speak.  Never assume that your case is won based on your own opinion; there is yet a judgment that may not be viewed by your standards.

If you are facing endless contention and no potential for a resolution without strife it may be best to resort to a decision by a roll of the dice, or casting lots.  This will resolve the issue with less grief when there is no clear logic or advantage to continued strife.

If you offend a brother or a close friend you will not soon restore that friendship.  It will be as hard as laying siege to a well fortified city.

In the end we earn the wages of our own words.  If we put out the words of bitterness, our belly will turn as sour as the strongest vinegar.  As we treat others to our best or worst words so our life is fed the fruit of those words.

Do our leaders know how their words and actions are building up towards their judgment? We do not have to stress over their actions, it will all go full circle in God’s time.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.  Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.  The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.  A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.  Proverbs 18:21-24

Death and life are great powers to wield with just words.  The warning comes with the love of talking.  It can be good or bad and either way there are consequences.

Finding a wife is a good thing, and it comes with benefits in God’s approval.  My wife has joined God ahead of me and I still know that he approved of her.  I still have photos and memories of that connection, but God reminds me that she brought benefits that continue today.  A godly wife leaves a treasure that endures all challenges for all time.

A poor man makes polite petitions for help as he is in need.  A rich man feels no need to help or to be civil to one who is beneath him.  Wealth is not a path to favor with God.

Anyone who has friends needs to be a friend at all times.  There is no room for a short temper among real friendships.  But then there is a friend who will be there in every time of need, who is even closer than family.  A real friend is available to everyone who calls on the name of the Lord.  Although it requires faith to depend on one who lives in the spiritual realm, Jesus can answer your need for a friend.
